Canyoneering/Desert Backpacking - Step Back in Time

The desert is ancient, primitive, alive with tenacious flora and fauna. It is an environment where you sense the slow movement of time in geologic formations and slick rock canyons formed by millions of years of coursing water. It is a place of secret shade and ingenuity, both of which you will rely on, as you seek protection from heat and find hidden pools of collected rainwater.

As you ascend steep-sided mesas, navigate in and out of box canyons and seek your next water source, you realize you are one of but a few who has ventured here. Today your route includes canyoneering, a technical descent of a narrow, steep "slot" canyon.

You may have to remove packs and construct a lowering system for them as you and your group rappel down a series of drops into the cool, shaded canyon. You emerge awed by the contrasts between canyon and desert, wilderness and home, before and after.

Discover rock paintings and cliff dwellings of ancient Native Americans in Utah's canyon lands. Sleep under the diamond studded night sky or rappel down the rim of Rattlesnake Canyon in Joshua Tree National Park in California. Explore, live and learn about these rugged and delicate environments, and uncover your strength.
