A thunderous roar of water drowns out every other sound. Heart racing with anticipation, mind and body electric with anticipation, you perch atop a rocky ledge, and peer at the rapid ahead.
Before you can say "Class IV" you and the rapid are all that exist. The raft lunges. A wave sends your bow skyward. You dig in, only vaguely aware of the fountain of water overhead. Then you're through it, into the calm water, soaked to the bone. You suck in a huge breath, let out a yell, and look back at where you've been. You just nailed Hell's Half Mile.
On your rafting adventure, you may be paddling rafts, paddlecats or sit-on-top kayaks. You learn to read the river with skill and intimacy and take your turn captaining one of the crafts through sections of whitewater with burgeoning skill.
You can choose to run the rapids of Orgeon's Deschutes River, marvel at the high canyon walls from the big-water rapids of the Colorado River, or maneuver through the Narrows of the wild Chattooga River in the Appalachians. Grab a paddle and feel the rush.
