Every Outward Bound course is challenging, but ever-changing weather conditions and the unpredictable nature of frozen terrain make winter expeditions particularly demanding and exciting! On a winter expedition, you will experience vast frozen lakes and towering forests draped in snow and ice. You'll come to know the joy of carving fresh tracks in the pristine snow, and you will learn how to live day-to-day in this rugged, forbidding environment. In the muffled stillness of a fresh snowfall, you'll hear the sound of self-reliance and a newfound confidence.
Working as a team, you travel on backcountry skis, snowshoes, or dogsled through these wild and beautiful landscapes. Learn the basics of avalanche safety, trail navigation through ice and snow, how to build a fire to prepare your meals, how to find water even when the temperature is very low, and how to use snow as insulation. You may even learn how to build a wood-fired sauna to rejuvenate your body after a day of cold-weather activities.
Whether you embark on a winter journey in the wilds of Maine, or a backcountry snow boarding adventure in the Rockies, you'll explore an environment and meet a challenge that most can only imagine!
This is a back country winter expedition in the Collegiate Peaks with opportunities to ride the out-of-area slopes and learn winter expedition skills. The terrain is challenging and we can only accept students with solid intermediate boarding skills.
