The course was Alaska sea kayaking in the Prince William
Sound from August 15 – August 21 for seven days.
I have never been to Alaska before but have always wanted
to see it. Many of my friends recently just had kids so I
couldn’t do anything with them, but still wanted to
go on an adventure. I had really no idea what to expect. When
our boat first dropped us off in the wilderness the first
thing I noticed was the quiet solitude, and also the scenic
mountains in the distance.
The kayaking was a workout, and even at times a struggle in
the rain. But the struggles pulled our group together and
made it that much more of an adventure. The wildlife was interesting,
we saw bald eagles everywhere, sea otters, seals, and were
even lucky enough to see a black bear. Our instructor caught
some salmon that made an excellent dinner that night. I would
say that it was the cleanest air I’ve ever breathed
before and it was great to get out of the city for seven days.
Listening to the life stories of others in the group was interesting,
and the good humor of the group really made the experience
worth while. One of the things we learned on the trip was
craftsmanship, and how much more fulfilling it is to build
something with our own hands… and we live in harmony
with nature and what we make, versus in the city where we’re
constantly aspiring to more possessions and more expensive
things, where in truth we don’t own the possessions
but rather they begin to own us! I really believe in that,
and expect to look towards that principle throughout my life.
We discussed other topics as well including compassion for
others and the environment, and also physical fitness and
leadership.
I am planning on doing another one and would recommend Outward
Bound to anyone interested in having an adventure!
