Exumas Bahamas Sea Kayaking

Explore uninhabited islands and turquoise waters on a challenging one-of-a-kind Caribbean adventure. Warm waters are ideal for practicing your “wet exit,” rescue and other paddling techniques. You’ll learn to read the tides and currents, applying new knowledge to your expedition. Team up to prepare a daily float plan that incudes an assessment of the day’s route and risk management. The translucent waters give you an amazing opportunity to observe marine life, and a day of snorkeling provides close-up views of exotic reefs. When you’re not paddling, discussions and group activities on the beach add to a purposeful and rich experience.

The Exumas chain of the Bahamas is comprised of more than 360 cays or islands, mostly uninhabited, that stretch for about 130 miles. The incandescent waters surrounding the Exumas cays -- always above 75 degrees F and some of the clearest and most colorful on Earth-- consist of underwater limestone and coral reefs, blue holes, caves and marine life like butterfly, angel and parrot fish, starfish, stingrays, sand dollars and three types of sea turtles.

The Outward Bound Difference… On this course run by North Carolina Outward Bound School, you’ll experience the Bahamas in ways most people don't: all the beauty of place (clear turqouise waters, warm winter temps, sea life) but a sea kayaking expedition in the Exumas allow these to be experienced in a primitive, non-commercialized setting (isolated, uninhabited beaches). Students develop leadership, independence, decision-making and responsibility. Through challenge and adventure, you discover you are capable of more than you thought possible.

You’ll develop teamwork while working together to find your way, set up camp, cook your own meals over a camp stove and learn Leave No Trace techniques to minimize your impact on the land. Solo is a time for reflection and rest at an individual campsite.

Students should come with a strong commitment to enjoy a fun and exciting course but also to tackle the physical challenges of sea kayaking in what can be a harsh environment as well as the mental challenges of living with and traveling in a group. Successful completion of your course demands mastery of skills, trust, fitness, confidence, tenacity, leadership, initiative and compassion. No experience is necessary. You’ll leave course with newfound strength that can help you through everyday situations as well as the unknown challenges to come.
