San Juan Islands Sea Kayaking

This sea kayaking expedition takes place in the waters of Puget Sound among the San Juan Islands. This is a perfect way to learn sea kayaking, see the Pacific Northwest and experience the sense of accomplishment only Outward Bound can deliver.

The Puget Sound is nestled between two prominent mountain ranges in the Northwest: The Olympic Coast Range and the Cascade Range. This area is the ultimate cruising ground with large expanses of sparkling water and mountain scenery. Sightings of Orca whales, seals, porpoise and eagles are very common. There are over 400 islands in the Sound, which is rimmed by rugged shorelines, pristine beaches and mountains.

The Outward Bound Difference
The instructors’ goal is to teach you the skills you need to become self-sufficient on the water. They will spend the early days of the expedition helping you master sea kayak skills, coaching you as you learn. As you grow more competent and confident with your skills, the instructors will ask that you take more responsibility for the leadership of the expedition, culminating in a student led final expedition.

Course Description
Paddle solo and tandem kayaks, sleep under the stars and explore the ocean environment. Build your skills in paddling, reading ocean currents, rescue techniques and navigating with charts all the while encountering birds, whales and sea otters. Sea kayaking is the perfect activity to challenge yourself and get hooked on Outward Bound. Solo and day hikes may be included.

NOTE: Sea kayaking required skills include learning how to enter and exit the craft while in the water. Non-swimmers may be challenged to successfully, or comfortably master these skills and may wish to consider an alternate activity.
