Yosemite Backpacking

This one-week backpacking course in the Sierra National Forest is specifically designed for adults over the age of 30. It includes formal and informal conversation to reflect on your experience and gain perspective on goals. Participants should be expecting challenge, reflection, camaraderie and beauty.

The Sierra Nevada is the largest mountain range in the contingent United States. It extends 400 miles from north to south which is bigger than the Swiss, Italian, and French Alps combined! It is filled with smooth granite domes and cliffs, cool alpine lakes, and lush meadows. Atop the domes we can view the jagged profiles of the LeConte Divide, the Ritter Range, and the Great Western Divide, all containing mountain peaks and passes up to 14,000 feet in elevation. The rugged and beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains provide an inspiring Outward Bound backpacking experience in an area that naturalist and explorer John Muir called the Range of Light. Even at night, under the moon the land is glowing with the beauty of the light.

Adult Renewal
Why does leaving life's comforts behind enlighten us? Sometimes it is a particular sunset or the "good" tired at the end of a day of genuine accomplishment. Sometimes it is going beyond your self-imposed limitations and sometimes it's the power of teamwork. But we can guarantee you will learn (or re-learn) that you are stronger than you know and that is something you can never un-learn. Outward Bound learning is permanent.

Here's the thing. Outward Bound is an idea that lets you shrink life and living down to the bare minimums: food, clothing, shelter and each other. By making the choice to experience life with less for a week (or two), you gain perspective on where you have been and where you are going. Renewal courses are true expeditions not seminars. Course Description
Backpack for a week on or off trails in Yosemite National Park. It is an area known for radiant granite domes and clear alpine lakes. Learn to minimize impact on the land using Leave No Trace techniques. Adult Renewal courses feature shorter distances and more time for reflection than our typical courses but do include wilderness skill instruction like map and compass navigation, a challenging peak attempt or a day of rock climbing and a focus on gaining new perspective. Yosemite Backpacking courses take place in one of the most famous wilderness areas of our nation and are designed with the adult learner in mind. Solo and service included.

About Adult courses - Outward Bound has been serving adults in the wilderness for nearly thirty years. All courses with a minimum age of 30 are delivered with Outward Bound's Renewal curriculum and offer modified itineraries to allow time for reflection and discussion. For adults interested in a less facilitated, more challenging Outward Bound course, our 23+ adult courses are ideal. We offer the 30+ and 23+ courses year round but outside of the summer months, courses are offered with a minimum age of 18 (18+) to serve a wider age range.
