Hundreds of colleges and high schools have granted academic
credit for Outward Bound expeditions in our 40+ years of operation.
You can receive academic credit through our partner college
or we would be happy to help you work with your academic advisor
to set up an Independent Study project at your school.
Outward Bound can now accept AmeriCorps
Education Awards!
How Can I Receive Academic Credit for an Outward Bound expedition?
To receive academic credit for Outward Bound expeditions,
you can choose from two options:
1. Arrange for an Independent Study through your high school
or college.
NOTE: Independent Study requires additional study before,
during, and after the course. Students must be motivated and
take initiative in order to receive academic credit.
OR
2. Arrange to transfer credits from our partner colleges.
Many High Schools, Colleges, and Universities provide credit
for Outward Bound Expeditions and more continue to do so every
year. Click to view the complete
list of schools who have partnered with Outward Bound.

Follow the steps below before enrolling on an Outward
Bound course:
If you wish to arrange for an Independent Study through your
high school or college:
1. Confirm with a teacher, advisor, or registrar that credit
is available through an Independent Study at your school.
2. Clearly establish what type of credit(s) will be awarded
and exactly what the credit will be used to fulfill.
3. Work with your teacher or advisor to design an Independent
Study project that you can complete during and after your
course. The best projects are well-structured, arranged in
advance, and include a post course component.
