Our field staff are accomplished outdoor educators, with extensive
training in technical and facilitation skills. Our class sizes are
small, and students come away from our courses with a rich introduction
to traveling in the natural world around them, as well as new ways
of looking inside themselves. Compassion, fun, and learning from
success form the foundation of our relationships with our students,
as we help them become a team of accomplished travelers.
Work Opportunities
We have over 100 available field opportunities for new staff each
summer, and most start work with us in one of the following positions:
Instructor: Staff hired as instructors already
have a significant base of experience leading one week or longer
wilderness trips for an organization with a mission similar to Outward
Bound. Following an introductory training, an Instructor works with
a Lead Instructor to deliver courses in the field. This provides
an excellent opportunity to get to know our institutional standards,
experiment with different curricula and teaching methods, and be
mentored by experienced staff. We are looking for diverse folks
with varied experience, and have a particular need for sailors,
whitewater paddlers, mountaineers, sea kayakers, and people with
experience and love for working with youth-at-risk. To begin the

Lead Instructor: Staff hired as Lead Instructors
are seasoned educators with more than 100+ days leading groups in
the field, and are experienced at training other staff. They possess
superior technical skills and previous experience working as outdoor
educators, either at Outward Bound or at comparable organizations.

Logistics Coordinator: Staff hired as Logistics
Coordinators (LC’s) provide the “behind the scenes”
expertise that supports the courses in the field and at base camp.
Duties entail driving, providing support to students and instructors
before, during, and after courses, and ensuring high-quality food,
gear, and vehicles. In return, LC’s get to learn about Outward
Bound from the inside out, building skills in a range of areas including
education, leadership, facilitation, and organization. While some
LC’s go on to work as field instructors in subsequent summers,
others continue in a logistics role, becoming leaders at their base
camps. Wherever your passion and interest lie, Outward Bound is
committed to professional development and job satisfactions for
our staff. Successful logistics coordinators are organized, willing
to work hard, and are dedicated to the school’s mission. To

Intern: Internships are designed to provide a greater
understanding of Outward Bound philosophy and operations, as well
as an opportunity to develop technical and group facilitation skills.
Many of our instructional staff start their Outward Bound career
as interns.
Depending on course area, program needs, and individual assessment,
internships vary in length and structure. Some internships lead
to a position as an Instructor that same summer, others may be combined
with support or logistics roles for the first year or two. Specific
training depends on the location for which you are hired. Many staff
hired as interns have experience leading trips already, or have
formal teaching experience. Care will be taken by the Staffing Managers
to place applicants in the internship that will offer challenge,
potential for advancement, and match the skills the intern brings
to the position. Instructor internships are based in Minnesota and
Montana; other programs offer logistics-based internships. To begin
