The Voyageur Outward Bound School, based on the edge of a million acre wilderness in Minnesota just 12 miles from the Canadian border is gearing up to celebrate its 40th anniversary. VOBS, the second Outward Bound School in the US ran it first courses in 1964. According to our first catalog “96 boys 16-23 years old, half on scholarships, from varied racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds and all parts of the United States” took part that first summer. It was 26 days and included “conditioning and basic training activities, skill and attitude building…Mastering nature’s rugged tests with teamwork and solo vigils in the wilderness”. Over the years VOBS has remained committed to our origins and to innovating and serving society’s changing needs. For our 40th anniversary we will focus on bringing the VOBS family together and looking back at our roots as inspiration for looking forward. Check our website (www.vobs.org) for specifics on events and opportunities to get involved and support VOBS.
