Outward Bound is embarking on a new and exciting course.
After over forty years of evolution and success, Outward Bound is embarking on a new and exciting course. Effective March 31, 2005 Outward Bound has affiliated five of its eight independent organizations into a single nonprofit. Outward Bound West (Golden, CO), Voyageur Outward Bound (Ely, MN), Hurricane Island Outward Bound (Rockland, ME) – (which includes Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound Center and The Philadelphia Outward Bound Center), Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (Garrison, NY) and the National Headquarters will be unifying into one entity - a new Outward Bound. North Carolina Outward Bound, along with New York City Outward Bound Center and Thompson Island Outward Bound Center will remain chartered entities.
This plan calls for the formation of five nationwide programs to serve: students on wilderness courses (Outward Bound Wilderness), business and professional organizations (Outward Bound Professional), whole school reform (Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound), troubled youth and their families (Outward Bound Discovery) and communities (Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound Center and Philadelphia Outward Bound Center).
Despite organizational changes, what will remain constant is the quality of our programs, the core values on which the organization is based, and our mission: "To inspire character development and self-discovery in people of all ages and walks of life through challenge and adventure, and to impel them to achieve more than they ever thought was possible, to show compassion for others and to actively engage in creating a better world."
